Emergency Tips 101: Lightning Safety
Today’s weather
can be pretty unpredictable. One moment
it’s warm and sunny, the next moment it can turn dark and gloomy. Since we do not have any control on the
elements, our best bet for survival during severe weather conditions depend on
how physically, emotionally and mentally prepared we are for any unforeseen incidents.
For this week, we
will have a series of blog posts tackling emergency situations involving
different scenarios. Today, we will talk
about Lightning Safety tips, both for indoors and outdoors.
Indoor Lightning
Safety Tips
- Stand clear of windows, doors and electrical
appliances.
- Don’t attempt to unplug TVs, stereos,
computers or other electrical equipment during a storm.
- Avoid contact with piping, including sinks,
baths and faucets.
- Don’t use the telephone, except for emergencies.
Outdoor Lightning Safety Tips
- Look for a shelter equipped with a lightning
protection system, such as those found at golf courses, public parks and
pools.
- Never use a tree as shelter.
- Avoid areas that are higher than the
surrounding landscape.
- Keep away from metal objects, including bikes,
golf carts, fencing and machinery.
- Avoid standing near tall objects.
- Immediately get out of—and away from—pools,
lakes and other bodies of water.
- If you’re in a crowd, spread out.
- If you feel a tingling sensation or your hair
stands on end, lightning may be about to strike! Immediately crouch down,
and cover your ears. Do not lie down or place your hands on the ground.
Learn CPR
Victims of
lightning strikes need to receive immediate CPR. You won’t be electrocuted if
you touch them. They hold no residual charge from the lightning, and they can
be safely handled. You can sign up for a CPR class at your local Red Cross
Training Center.
Of course, to be
truly prepared, you have to have an emergency kit handy. Livshop : Australia ’s no. 1 online retailer of heathcare and medical supplies has
