Getting a tattoo is proving to be more and more popular this days as a form of self-expression.  While not for everyone, those brave enough to bear the pain of getting inked the first time find themselves wanting to add more right after.

If you feel like you're ready to take the plunge and get your first tattoo, here are some of the things you need to know first before heading to your tattoo artist

No to public swimming
1.  Remember: Tattoos are Healing Surface Wounds

Stay away from public pools, public saunas and bath hubs as the healing skin is more prone to infection after the procedure.  These places provide an easy breeding ground to bacteria that could enter your skin through your tattoo wound and lead to high-risk infections.  Prolonged soaking can also cause the scab to come off too soon hurting your new tattoo.

Rest, relax and eat healthy
2.  Rest, Relax and Eat healthy a day before getting your tattoo.

Try to get a good night's sleep by getting to bed early the night before the procedure.  On the day of your tattoo appointment, make sure you also eat a healthy meal an hour or two before heading to the tattoo shop.  This ensures that your body is able to cope with the stress in case the procedure gets too painful.

3.  Refrain from drinking alcohol or taking medicine the day before your tattoo appointment.

Both Alcohol and medicine thins the blood making you bleed profusely.

4.  Ask a friend to accompany you

You may become disoriented or light-headed after the tattoo process so it would help if you are with a friend so they can assist you in getting up and drive you home after just in case you are unable to do so yourself.

The most important thing you should do is to talk to your tattoo artist about any medical conditions and known allergies.  This way, they can take precautionary measures and ensure that the medical equipment and products they might use on you is safe.
